Best artificial grass for dogs
Artificial grass is brilliant for dog owners — no mud, no patches, no digging. But not all grass is equal for pets. Here's what actually matters, and how to work out how much you need.

- Good drainage. The most important feature — a permeable backing lets urine and rain drain straight through, so smells don't build up. Most quality grass drains well; check the listing.
- Durable, dense pile. Dogs run the same routes and dig at edges. A higher density (more stitches) bounces back better than cheap thin grass.
- Medium pile height (around 30mm). Long, soft luxury piles flatten under paws and trap mess; very short piles feel harsh. ~30mm is a good all-rounder, with 25–35mm all fine.
- Non-toxic, lead-free. Reputable UK grass is tested safe for children and pets — look for that on the listing.
Keeping it clean
Hose it down occasionally, pick up solids as you would on a real lawn, and use an artificial-grass cleaner now and then to keep it fresh. Kiln-dried sand infill helps too — it weighs the grass down and aids drainage.
How much will you need?
Measure your garden and remember grass comes on fixed-width rolls, so you'll buy a little more than the bare area. Our calculator does this for you and ranks the roll widths by cost and joins — handy if you want to keep waste (and spend) down.
