2m vs 4m artificial grass: which width should you buy?
In the UK, artificial grass is mostly sold in 2m and 4m rolls (with 1m, 1.5m and 3m also available). The right choice comes down to a simple trade-off: fewer joins versus less waste.

A 4m roll covers more in one strip, so you get fewer joins (seams) — neater and quicker to lay. A 2m roll is lighter to handle and often wastes less on narrow or small gardens, but you may need an extra strip and therefore an extra join.
When 4m wins
- Your lawn is roughly 4m wide or a clean multiple of it — little waste, and a single seamless-looking strip.
- You want the neatest finish and the fewest joins to glue.
- You've got help — a 4m roll is heavy and awkward for one person.
When 2m (or 1m) wins
- Narrow areas, paths, balconies or small gardens, where a wide roll would waste a lot.
- You're working alone — narrower rolls are far easier to carry and position.
- Tight access (side gates, stairs) where a 4m roll simply won't fit.
Don't forget 1.5m and 3m
These sizes are easy to overlook but can be perfect. A garden that's exactly 3m wide fits a 3m roll with zero waste and no joins at all — something neither 2m nor 4m can match. This is exactly why it pays to compare every width rather than defaulting to one.
A quick example
For a 6m × 5m lawn: a 1m roll wastes nothing but needs 4 joins; a 4m roll has just 1 join but ~18 m² of spare; a 3m roll lands neatly in between with 1 join and only ~6 m² spare. There's rarely one "right" answer — it depends on whether you value cost or tidiness more.

Done well — pile facing the same way, joined with tape and adhesive, sand brushed in — they're hard to spot. Done badly they show, which is why fewer joins is often worth a little extra grass.
What widths are actually sold in the UK?
2m and 4m are the most common; 1m, 1.5m and 3m are widely available too. 5m is rare.
Can I mix widths?
It's usually simplest to stick to one width and run all strips the same direction, but mixing is possible for awkward shapes.
